Ask Mable: So Close But So Far

Stranger Danger asks,

“My neighbour and I often shovel each others’ walkway, but I don’t know his name! I don’t know how to start a dialog with him, but I’ve lived here for 2 years so the longer it goes the more awkward it feels.”

Next time you see your neighbour, just go up to him and try an opening line that might go something along the lines – “Hello, my name is so-and-so, your neighbour, I’ve seen you around, unfortunately, we haven’t had the opportunity to officially meet.” You could express your appreciation of having a good neighbour. This happens so much at the yoga studio I attend. I’ve been a member for over 5 years and just last Wednesday had a similar situation.
