Dear S.C.:

It is more acceptable to take off your sunglasses in the company of others. Direct eye contact (depending on cultures) let others see that you are open, friendly and genuine. However, if you are all gathered outside in the sun, it is a reasonable expectation to be wearing sunglasses, so there is little risk to be offending anyone.
